One random roll of black and white film that I got developed <3... 35mm moments of my life from August 2022

I wanted to see the current exhibition at the LACMA on Friday night after work so I managed snag a free ticket to the LEE ALEXANDER MCQUEEN: MIND, MYTHOS, MUSE exhibition that is currently on view. "One of the most significant contributors to fashion between 1990 and 2010, Lee Alexander McQueen was both a conceptual and technical virtuoso. His critically acclaimed collections synthesized the designer's proficiency in tailoring and dressmaking with both encloypedic and autobiographical references that spanned time, geography, media, and technology." His work was breathtaking to see in person. The way that the museum displayed his garments on mannequins floating within the gallery space really advocated for his artistry- there were no visual distractions in the background. It was absolutely stunning!!! Some of the garments were simple in ideation but produced so sophisticatedly through infrastructure and craft. A jacket was not just a jacket, it was a multidimensional puzzle in cloth built up of pieces and parts. I imagined myself in every piece that was displayed with a completely different life and a full transformation of narrative being so worthy to adorn myself in his work on my body. On Saturday I continued my pursuit into the arts and culture space of LA and had purchased a ticket to the Getty Center. It was my first time every going! I was searching for labyrinths in the Los Angeles area and saw that the Getty was one place that held representation of a labyrinth within the county so originally my pursuit started with this intention (later discovering that you could not walk the Getty labyrinth only visit and look from afar because it was also floating in water). This museum had a "campus" type of vibe nestled in the hills close to Santa Monica and Malibu. Research institutions are also a part of this museum which creates a campus type of vibe upon entering. I had such a great first experience visiting that I got a Getty Center t-shirt to help support the foundation in the gift shop upon leaving lol- also some exhibition post cards from Cy Twombly that I sent family and friends after.
Cy Twombly was currently being exhibited when I visited the Getty galleries. I had seen a few of his paintings before at a random happening in Philadelphia when I visited a museum there while traveling years ago. I was able to make that connection because of his stylistic notes apparent in his work upon walking into his recent show... "This exhibition explores Twombly's lifelong fascination with the ancient Mediterranean world through evocative groupings of his paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures- tracing an imaginative journey of encounters with and responses to ancient texts and artifacts." What I loved most about his exhibition space was the inclusion of Greek and Roman antiquities from the artist's personal collection with personal photographs of the artist himself from his early timeline moving to Europe. It was interesting to me that at the beginning of his career instead of moving to a major city within the United States (like every other millennial these days), he chose to move to Itay in 1959, where he engaged creatively. The allusions to mythology, poetry, and archaeology were infused entirely in his work. I interpreted his references to ancient art and literature as obsessions into mythology- his historical references were written in almost every piece displayed. "Drifting in and out of legibility, Twombly's work comes across as elusive, private, and coded, but it also invites the viewer to engage freely and imaginatively, to search for meaning among the scattered signs and gestures." He was indirectly and ambiguously expressing himself through the poetic world of the ancients. Normally I walk through museums and exhibitions with the intention of simply experiencing the authentic and aesthetic- but for his presentation I took the time to read and learn as I ventured through it absorbing the work. Life Update in Film 35mm: I got back from my summer tour job at the beginning of August 2022 and picked up my camera from the repair shop in Glendale (it had stopped working back in April after I took it to the beach for a photoshoot). I immediately started to take my point-and-shoot back out into Los Angeles and found some magical moments of time that I have documented in 35mm film since being "home" and getting acclimated to a stable life... for the time being. I worked a side gig in China Town and got to explore the little community that is there for the first time developing my own connections. I am extremely inspired by the coin operated child rides that exist in the alleys. I also took an impromptu trip with my lover to VEGAS for the Red Hot Chili Peppers Concert and got to see the rocks in the desert I have been dreaming about. These photographs document my time back from tour and reintroducing myself to the city I live in. And then my camera broke again... Where the closure of my film door does not latch anymore and I had to scramble to prevent the light from hitting my film... It was a disaster. I now have to tape the door closed while using my point and shoot film camera. After I spent 150.00 on an internal repair my camera has once again showed its age and I now work around the inconvenience with plastic tape. Amen. At least I can still take photos for the time being. I am posting the exposed film below for reference. <3 Bad Strawberry (Chocolate Dipped) 2022Kathleen Ryan
