I found an old pack of prismacolor PREMIER colored pencils in my storage and decided to push myself to work with them again in a new sketchbook. I miss being able to intuitively express myself in visual ways without restrictions or critical judgements on my decision making. It has been an adjustment for me to understand the materials again on paper. I was at LAX this past weekend waiting for my flight to San Francisco... that eventually got canceled... but while I was waiting at the gate I started my new exploration of colored pencils drawing from real life. I bought a mini yellow Fabriano sketchbook at the art store prior to my trip and began working in it . I have been retraining my heavy hand to lighten up. I am interested in pushing and pulling the visual nature of line with colored pencils through shape and layering of mark. Avoiding to naturally start the foundation of my drawings with a pen outline... I want to play with composition and color. Developing a new process of image creation in my own sketchbook routine. I do not necessarily like anything I've doodled thus far in my new sketchbook but I am excited about pushing myself with material. I also want to build my doodles and provide my drawings with more information in the beginning stages of ideation so I can potentially use them for paintings in the future. This is what I am planning for.
I was alerted of a time-hop, from January 2017, scanned images of my old sketchbook. Upon reminiscing at the doodles and rereading my mental notes from the past- I placed myself back in my fiber residency at Praxis Fiber Workshop while finishing the second semester of my Masters Degree from Case Western Reserve University. I remember exactly who I was at that time in my life, the pain I was struggling with, and the ideas I was thinking about in order to push past my present moment. These messages and doodles still hold weight for me in my present moment- they are timeless reminders.
It is officially a new year, hi 2023. I have begun documenting my favorite things in a KALE digital collage format that I started to implement into my studio practice last year. This way of creating images is fun, intuitive, and freeform. I can revisit these brainstorming bubbles at a later date and come right back to where I left off. I am inspired by color, texture, character, and the feminine.
I went to the Japanese dollar store here in Los Angeles, called DAISIO, and found some Japanese shrink paper. I got super excited because I have had this internal itch to find ways to make artist gibbets for Crocs... as a new age product to possibly sell as well as a fun exploration within my art practice... When I saw this "Shrinky Dink" paper I immediately thought I could find a way to attach it to a gibbet and possibly create cute accessories for wear. I tested it out in a toaster oven to see how it preformed.
I found an old doodle zine I had made many years ago and became reinspired to start making these self-published magazines for fun again. This version only requires one sheet of paper. I wanted to bring value within the message, so I incorporated more intention into my creation process for this publication. I have decided that the new zines I create are going to be a fun "guerrilla" meditation series. Attached above is the formula to volume one! Reproduced via copy machine, the aesthetic of printer copy is what attracts me to making this way. Free, fast, and readily producible. I am going to be giving these away at my vending booth next month at the Rose Bowl Flea Market.
Before leaving for my New Year's Holiday trip to Ohio I managed to drop off four rolls of film at FreeStyle Photo in Hollywood to get processed. I normally don't mind paying for development but it was extremely expensive and I felt the pain swiping my card this time (around one hundred dollars and some change for one new roll of 35 mm film and four old rolls developed). I've been struggling to find places to buy 35mm film lately and have also noticed a film shortage. Regardless, I had no clue what was on some of the rolls and was excited to see my memories come alive. I have been shooting film on my point and shoot Canon Z155 Caption. |
