These are new micro studies that I have recently painted. I am using acrylic and gouache on top of found image micro baseball cards from the 90's. I explain more about this way of making and this new body of work in a previous post... but I have been continuing to dedicate my time to this work by playing with shape, color, and composition. I enjoy painting this way because I get to see where it might take me through investigation expression and creativity.
Instead of mindless scrolling when I do find myself wasting my time, via on my phone, I try and make it intentional in the sense that I screen shot images that are attractive to me on the internet. I save these images for later absorption and use them to make these digital collages I define as "mood boards" which has become a new habit within my studio practice. I am heavily influenced by fashion, vintage designer pieces, color, collaborations, graphics, patterns and textures, all things KITCHY and QUIRKY... I love expression in all capacities. I share these mood boards online to help inspire other humans and let people know what I am thinking about.
When I was at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena during the month of November I had found a Calvin and Hobbes book from a vendor of vintage novels. I had purchased it for my brother for Xmas because he loved the series growing up. I ripped out a page that resonated with me and painted it in acrylic and gouache. I am going to frame it to give to him alongside the book.<3
I was inspired by the kitty weavings nailed to the walls upon entrance to the show, "Tread Lightly" at Lauren Powell Projects. I had never seen fiber weavings be presented in a new shape with character ideation... I want to try this creative approach in my own work!
A list of galleries I complied for after work on a Friday night in December last weekend. I have actively been trying to broaden my knowledge of the art community in Los Angeles since moving here and starting my stable job after touring this summer. I work with galleries, museums, high profile collectors of art, art fairs, etc. as clients for a logistics coordination job in LA. SADE GALLERY was in the neighborhood of my boyfriend's home and I had no idea!!! I made a new connection to my environment and I felt so proud of my Self for putting myself out there to expand my horizons and create a new connection in Lincoln Heights. I would have never known it was there prior to my own research. ***The show was interactive in the sense that you fully got to walk around the work since the sculptures were free standing in the space and large scale (some of the pieces were taller than myself). The plaster sculptures almost blended into the white walls of the gallery, but because there were giant gestural black strokes composed all over them, they popped and felt even more intimidating. Art was littered on the walls, floor, standing in the middle of the room, and hanging from the ceiling. The show was called, "WHEN WE GROW UP" by Daniela Soberman.
I have finally started creating new work!!! These two paintings are the first in my micro mini baseball card series where I am investigating shape and color theory. When I was on tour this summer we stopped in Hopewell, Virginia for a show and I had some time before load in where I got to explore the small town. There was this antique store and record shop that I dived into and found a set of micro mini baseball cards for eight dollars. The set is originally from the 90's and has about seven hundred mini authentic cards inside with varying teams and players. I instantly claimed them and made them mine. I have worked on baseball cards in the past, from a set that I inherited from my grand father, so the images on the cards are familiar to me but the size is something new that I will explore working with for the first time.
I have bought a magnifying glass to assist me when painting on the micro image and have identified the instrument as an important part of this new work and new process of making. I am extremely attracted to the portraiture of the players on the cards, the facial expressions that create personality, the colors and shapes that are present within the images that I use as reference, and the different backgrounds that are depicted which provide context to space and time. |
