April was a new spot in the antiques and collectibles section at the Rose Bowl Flea Market for shoplilyungkale. PP14... 20 by 30 feet of cement to tackle in booth form. I spread my rolling racks out onto the side of my tent filled with custom clothing and sourced vintage. I had my own personal display of antiques at the front of my tent highlighting the panda lamp that I expected to sell instantly but never ending up getting an offer... Many admirable comments but no takers. And I had my handmade incense burners as well as postcards displayed inside my tent with hand painted leather goods. It was a beautiful day and it was Easter Sunday. The sun came out burning my skin, but taught me the valuable lesson of packing sunscreen in my Rose Bowl tool kit.

I started working with clay at the beginning of 2023. There is a ceramics studio walking distance from my house. I took a leap into a wheel throwing class on Thursday nights and then later a hand-building class on Tuesdays nights... now I am an official member with my own shelf space! I am taking my time at the studio seriously and focusing on intentionally making things I enjoy but also so having fun. It is a form of release and harmony being in this community center working with my hands. I have no prior experience wheel throwing and find it quite challenging... it is definitely something that takes time and practice. Not all of my pieces have worked out so it has also been somewhat of a learning curve to get my technique and process right. I love it there. I visited Anat Egbi Wilshire Gallery for the first time last weekend because I wanted to see the 7ft tall oil paintings of Robert Russell in person to compare their visual integrity that radiates through a screen vs. in real life. I was extremely impressed to say the least. I also had the privilege of getting to experience the gallery by myself because it was early enough on Saturday morning at opening that nobody else was there. Being able to take my time and spend a moment with each painting helped me compare and absorb the skill and brushstrokes of Russell who has most certainly perfected his craft. It wasn't until after I left that I researched the meaning behind the Allach porcelain figurines within his paintings and found out they hold significant importance to his religion and comprehension of being a Jewish Artist reclaiming and exposing Nazi monstrosity.
What I've been working on lately inside a new blue covered sketchbook. This sketchbook was started in March 2023. I have been playing around with oil pastels.
Plastiline clay in a plexi frame... Visually, I was immediately compelled by the graphic nature of the pieces and upon further investigation within the images, I realized they were composed of clay!!!! The material identification made me want to revisit the works again and again with more attention to detail. Absolutely insane. I have never seen plastiline clay used two-dimesionally like this!!!!! Absorbing the narration (visually) and appreciating the skill and craft that was used to apply the material flawlessly together to create the work... inevitably telling a story through an overall illustration in material investigation. I have taken note of these works and the material intention and I now want to play with this material two-dimensionally within my own studio practice to see what I can create... Normally I approach working with this material three dimensionally which is why this is such an inspiration for me. I have recently been exploring air clay as well as taking ceramic classes at a local studio so these pieces really activated my sense of PLAY. Currently being presented in Miami, FL I later discovered these pieces are LARGE and require a lot of time and attention to detail. WOW I AM LITERALLY IN AWE OF THIS APPROACH TOWARDS MAKING AND WISH I WOULD HAVE CREATED THESE CONNECTIONS ON MY OWN IN MY STUDIO. I AM EXTREMELY EXCITED TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE THIS IMPACT OF CONTEMPORARY CULTURE WITHIN MY OWN WORK. See below: Taken from the Gavlak Gallery Website: FriendsWithYou is the art collaboration of Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III, created with the intention to bring more joy, kindness, and love to the world. The collaboration is a vehicle for the exploration of emotional healing through culture creation and art making. Each work is created with the intention of transcendence, and nurturing care for the viewer or participant. FriendsWithYou’s meaning is in its name, in that everything in the universe can and wants to be friends with you, an aide in the promotion of love, harmony & peace in our lives. Our goal is to connect and heal as much as possible through our work, to grow the love and joy in each person, creating an exponential aggregate of sharing, healing, and compassion for each other and our living planet.
