I have finally started creating new work!!! These two paintings are the first in my micro mini baseball card series where I am investigating shape and color theory. When I was on tour this summer we stopped in Hopewell, Virginia for a show and I had some time before load in where I got to explore the small town. There was this antique store and record shop that I dived into and found a set of micro mini baseball cards for eight dollars. The set is originally from the 90's and has about seven hundred mini authentic cards inside with varying teams and players. I instantly claimed them and made them mine. I have worked on baseball cards in the past, from a set that I inherited from my grand father, so the images on the cards are familiar to me but the size is something new that I will explore working with for the first time.
I have bought a magnifying glass to assist me when painting on the micro image and have identified the instrument as an important part of this new work and new process of making. I am extremely attracted to the portraiture of the players on the cards, the facial expressions that create personality, the colors and shapes that are present within the images that I use as reference, and the different backgrounds that are depicted which provide context to space and time.
